Autismus
'Autismus' is a series dedicated to my autistic self, capturing the spectrum as I see it through self portraits. I discuss how Autism impacts my everyday life, through fantastical fine art portraits.
The series progresses from childhood- where I got the diagnoses from the age of two, all the way up to adult life, where I have had to learn just how autism impacts the day-to-day. Each image collectively acts as a journey through the spectrum from my perspective. As I grew up, there were more emotional and situational struggles.
Adulthood has helped me unlock this part of myself, so in building this series- I have been able to create visual representations of what I go through in my head. Through these conceptual based self portraits, I have been able to create worlds that show the embracing of something I once felt needed to be hidden; through elements such as large folds of fabrics (mixed media), open spaces and soft colour palettes, I have been able to personify how autism affects me.
The hope of this series is that it may educate those who don’t know about autism, as well as those who know me, but perhaps don’t know about my autism specifically. I also hope to share my story with a like-minded community, allowing them the opportunity to resonate with my vulnerabilities.
‘Autismus’ is a continued work in progress and as I unlock more regarding my autism, I shall continue to create pieces to build this series.
